Hurricane, evacuation and power planning

Plan with your support network and county, and understand the limits of Special Needs Registry registration.

Who this may help: Adults who need to plan for access, communication, transport, equipment or continuity of support during a disaster.

Official information checked Nov 1, 2026. Program staff decide eligibility and access; this guide does not assess care needs.

Prepare with the people who support you

Discuss transport, access, communication, medication arrangements, assistive devices and backup power with your support network and providers. Ask a home-care agency how its arrangements work during an evacuation and plan what happens if ordinary support is interrupted.

Use county emergency-management information for local evacuation and shelter instructions. Check equipment and clinical questions with the appropriate provider or care team. A directory listing cannot confirm incident-specific shelter opening, transport or power availability.

  • Who knows the plan and how will we communicate if usual channels fail?
  • How will transport and access work for the person and their equipment?
  • What arrangements apply if normal support or electricity is interrupted?

Register through the official county route

Florida’s Special Needs Registry collects information for emergency-management planning. Select the relevant county and keep the registration current. Registration does not automatically qualify someone for a special-needs shelter and does not guarantee emergency assistance.

Ask the county about assessment, transport and shelter arrangements. The registry is an official planning route; Find Care Florida does not collect registry information or dispatch assistance.

Check the shelter and plan that fit

General and special-needs shelters have different capabilities. A disability alone does not establish that a special-needs shelter is necessary or that it can meet every medical need. Follow county instructions and official packing guidance.

Emergency planning is separate from commercial care enquiries. Use the official links here for preparedness and current local instructions.
