Adapting a home for access

Plan ramps, grab rails and bathroom or access changes, with clear questions about assessment, design and installation.

Begin with the task and the home

Describe the activity that is difficult: entering the home, moving between rooms, using a bathroom or operating a door. Discuss assessment needs with a relevant qualified professional and the person using the space. A standard product or another person’s adaptation may not fit the home.

APD lists environmental accessibility adaptations as a specific program service. A broad source label does not establish that a provider installs every kind of ramp, grab rail or bathroom adaptation.

  • Who assesses the need and specifies the work?
  • Which particular adaptations do you provide, and what is outside your scope?
  • What permits, property-owner consent or applicable contractor credentials are needed?

Separate assessment, equipment and building work

An occupational-therapy assessment, an equipment purchase and structural installation can involve different providers and costs. Ordinary housekeeping or a general home-care listing does not establish construction or adaptation skills.

Ask for a written specification, total price, responsibility for permits and inspections, and arrangements for maintenance. Check the applicable contractor licence through DBPR and the local building authority. A directory classification is not a workmanship assessment.

Explore program and community help

Ask APD about authorization if you receive relevant waiver services. A Center for Independent Living may explain local access resources, and FAAST may help you explore assistive technology. Neither a referral nor a demonstration guarantees funding or an approved adaptation.
