Vision, hearing and communication support

Explore Blind Services, independent-living resources and assistive technology without assuming a device or program fits everyone.

Who this may help: Adults seeking help with daily tasks, communication preferences or access to information.

Official information checked Nov 1, 2026. Program staff decide eligibility and access; this guide does not assess care needs.

Start with the activity you want to do

Describe the task: reading correspondence, making calls, communicating in appointments, getting around or using a device. Ask the relevant service about assessment, accessible formats and the person’s preferred way to communicate.

Florida Blind Services’ Independent Living Adult Program is a route for eligible adults with visual impairment who want help with independent-living skills. Employment-related rehabilitation is a separate conversation.

  • Which eligibility and assessment requirements apply?
  • Can information and appointments be provided in my preferred format?
  • Is training, trial use or follow-up available?

Explore devices with appropriate support

FAAST demonstrations and loans may help people explore assistive technology. Centers for Independent Living can discuss local independent-living and communication resources. Ask each organization which specific service it provides; a resource contact is not evidence of a hearing clinic or a therapist.

FTRI provides specialized telecommunications equipment for qualifying Florida residents with hearing or speech disabilities. Ask about eligibility documentation, device choices, training and local equipment support. This is separate from a hearing-aid or clinical-service route.

A supplier listing for a speech-generating device supports a supply category, not speech therapy or a recommendation for that device. Clinical hearing, vision and communication needs should be discussed with an appropriate qualified professional.

Confirm access for each care arrangement

Ask a care provider how communication will work during ordinary visits, out-of-hours contact and emergencies. The directory does not infer sign-language access, hearing support or accessible documents from a generic accessibility label.
